Jimmy Binns is the only lawyer to have won the Indy 500

The 1981 Indianapolis 500 stands as one of the most contentious races in IndyCar history. Bobby Unser secured pole position and led for 89 laps, ultimately crossing the finish line ahead of Mario Andretti. However, during a caution on lap 149, Unser passed eight cars while exiting the pits. A move which went unnoticed during the race but was later deemed a violation. The following day, race officials penalized Unser one position, awarding the win to Andretti. Roger Penske, Unser’s team owner, appealed the decision and enlisted James J. Binns to lead the legal challenge. After a protracted appeals process, Unser was reinstated as the winner in October 1981.
